Multidisciplinary, Evidence-Based, Patient-Centred Care

Dr. Corisande Baldwin and Dr. David Shaw are adult rheumatologists, practicing in Victoria, BC, on the traditional and unceded territories of the the Lkwungen (Songhees and Esquimalt) First Nations. They strive to provide comprehensive, safe and inclusive multidisciplinary care to patients throughout the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Rheumatology is the field of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and management of treatments for autoimmune disease and arthritis. Rheumatologists are trained in internal medicine and rheumatology. We manage a variety of inflammatory conditions, including inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis), inflammatory back disease (ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis), connective tissue diseases (lupus, myositis, scleroderma) and vasculitis.

To book an appointment with Dr. Baldwin or Dr. Shaw, patients must obtain a referral from their family doctor or another physician. Consultations and services are covered by the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP).

For Dr. Baldwin’s Patients:

Please be aware that some of our services (uninsured consultation or follow-ups, doctors notes, forms, etc) are not covered by MSP and you may be charged a fee. Moreover, due to the long waitlist to see a rheumatologist on Vancouver Island, Dr. Baldwin is charging a fee for “no shows.” Please see the button below for Dr. Baldwin’s fees for “no shows” and services not covered by MSP. Please note, this is for Dr. Baldwin’s practice only:

COVID-19 Office Policy

We continue to be dedicated to providing you with patient-centred care within the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. In line with public health precautions, Dr. Baldwin and Dr. Shaw are now seeing the majority of patients in person. Medical grade masks are available but not required when coming to the Island Rheumatology clinic. All rooms and common surfaces are sterilized between patients.

In the event that your rheumatologist or nurse is unwell or has COVID-19 positive within 5 days of your appointment, your appointment may need to be cancelled and/or changed to a telehealth appointment. Accordingly, our staff may be working from home and using their personal phones to reach you to continue to provide care. These numbers are blocked for confidentiality so please ensure you are answering blocked calls on the day of your appointment as this might be a member of our team trying to reach you.

In person appointments are scheduled in the following manner:

Dr. Baldwin: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Island Rheumatology; Tuesdays at the Victoria Arthritis Centre. Please note she is not in the office on Fridays.

Dr. Shaw: Monday - Wednesday and Friday only at Island Rheumatology. Please note he is not in the office on Thursdays.

In order to attend an in-person appointment please ensure the following:

  • Please ensure you have not had cold or viral symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat) or been in contact with a COVID-19 positive person within the last 5 days. If you have been in contact with a COVID-19 positive person please follow current BC CDC guidelines and contact the office to change your appointment to telehealth or an alternative date.

  • Please use the hand sanitizer provided on arrival and on departure from your appointment. Masks are also available at reception for those prefer them.

  • When possible, please arrive at or shortly before your appointment but not more than 15 minutes prior. We are receiving patients in the waiting room, but do not have a lot of space for distancing if multiple patients are waiting to be seen.

  • We recommend that all patients be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Please contact your local public health authority for up-to-date public health orders and recommendations with respect to COVID-19 as the information on this site may not be up-to-date.
